Travel Must Have’s and What If’s

Bali Sunset

You know those books of questions.  Maybe you’ve played them at dinner parties (if you’ve never been to one, or hosted one then you’re probably under 20), on a road trip, or killing time in Jakarta or Bangkok traffic.  I’ve come up with my own travel and food version, and you may even find a few practical.  At the very least, they’ll give you something to laugh about…I hope.  Because other than chocolate, cheese, chocolate and cheese together (yes, delish!  A future blog), laughter does make everything better and less likely to punch the guy on his cell phone, going 45 in the fast lane, in his Prius!

4 things I can’t leave home without:

  • Journal.  The best companion.
  • Ipod.  The music seems to mean more after the trip when it can conjure up the most vivid memories.
  • Neti-pot. Life is now organized into two parts: b.n. and a.n. (before neti and after neti)
  • Tjing Tjau.  This yellow balsam is initially frowned upon when I introduce it, but everyone leaves with a bottle from me after it has saved their lives.  Tiger Balm, who?  Have an insect bite? Tjing Tjau.  Feeling nauseated?  Tjing Tjau.  About to hurl ‘cause it smells like you just walked into an open field of human feces? (Check out the documentary, “World’s Toilet Crisis” by Adam Yamaguchi to get an idea.) Tjing Tjau!!  For the latter, it may not obliterate the stink but it will give you a few seconds to restore your will to live.

2 T.V. characters I’d want as travel buds:

  • Nikita.   I’d never have to worry about walking down a dark alley; also, cool clothes to borrow, though with 4 sizes between us I’d have to go vegan and she’d have to eat a lot more vegan peanut butter and jelly sammiches.
  • Barney Stinson.  Cuz he’s awesome.  True story.

3 snacks/beverages:

  • 1.5 liter of Trader Joe’s bottled water.  Best $0.69 you can spend.
  • Original Pringles in the red tube.  Easy to pack.  Holds me over until I find a churrascaria.
  • Banana or apple.  Easy to pack.  Easy to toss.

A trip where you’d have to spend all your money after you and your crew, or travel buds in my case (see above),  pull off the biggest bank heist so that they couldn’t trace the money:  (we all wish we could do this, especially in this economy)

  • Monte Carlo.  While my friends hit the casino, I’d be in my box seats at the Monte Carlo Open watching Roger battle Rafa, sitting next to Anna Wintour and asking her, “what’s with the sunglasses…all the live long day?”
  • A road trip along the South American coast.   No motorcycle.  No Che.  Just me, my rogue assassin, and his awesomeness.

The travel shows I’d wanna crash

  • No Reservations.  Anthony Bourdain still rocks.
  • Bizarre Foods.  I just wanna introduce Andrew Zimmern to a vegetable.
  • Dhani Tackles the Globe.  Love!  Why isn’t he on prime time?!  Man vs. Food can go.  Adam is a walking coronary I can’t bear to watch.  Takes a lot to make me hate food, and he’s done it.

Food Shows I’d wanna crash or just be a taste tester

  • Barefoot Contessa.   Can I please be her neighbor?
  • Giada at Home.  Can I be her best friend?
  • Paula Dean.  What doesn’t taste good fried?  Yummation.

Things I don’t mind splurging on when I travel

  • Accommodations.  These days “backpacking” means the thing I use as a carry on or a day trip.  I don’t mind sleeping on a fishing boat and being the main course for all the mosquitoes and their flesh eating relatives after walking in the rain and trekking mud in my flip flops, as long as I go home to an air-conditioned room with a clean bathroom and hot water.

  • A real cup of coffee to start the morning.  The complimentary instant packets in the room as a starter is fine, but I need the real deal in an American size mug; one I can hold with both hands.  A demitasse just won’t do.  And of course a pastry or 2.  Or just bring a tray of it.

  • Sunset drinks with a view.  No place comes close to Bali.  On the beach, near a river, on a cliff, near a waterfall, near a volcano, overlooking the padi/rice fields, or at your private island for the day.  The view is always spectacular and the experience one you will compare with all those that follow and still fall short.

The Birth of Biophilia

Biophilia

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Björk said, “It felt like the music industry was off the grid, and I wanted to solve the riddle.”  The riddle has been solved and she’s back and ready to blow our minds. She revamped her website and unveiled a multimedia project called Biophilia.

Originally, Biophilia was envisioned as an Icelandic school/art installation, dedicated to music and nature. Björk said, “I would just be there and people would come to me.”  Biophilia has bloomed into a concept album about nature with songs inspired by DNA, tectonic plates and crystals. Two top app developers, Max Weisel and Theodore Gray created 10 iPad apps for Biophilia. These apps integrate interactive games, musical animations, animated scores, lyrics and academic essays. Basically every app has a game where users can manipulate the song in different ways while playing. For non Ipad users, Biophilia will also be released in traditional physical and digital formats this September.

Björk worked with scientists, instrument makers, and sound designers to invent new instruments for the album.

The Gameleste that is part Gamelan part Celeste featured on the track ‘Crystalline‘ was invented by Björgvin Tómasson.

The Gravity Harps, four 10-foot pendulums with cylindrical harps attached to the end producing an elaborate music-box melody invented by Andy Cavatorta.  Be prepared to be mesmerized to the sound of the Gravity Harps on the track ‘Solstice.’

The Sharpsichord that took four years to complete by sound sculptor Henry Dagg. The massive, pin-barrel harp allows even a non-musician to produce a melody. Just listen to ‘Sacrifice‘ if you want to check out the Sharpsichord.

Björk has revealed plans for a three-year educational tour. She hopes to visit eight cities around the world, spending a month and a half in each. In each city Björk will perform Biophilia twice a week, for the rest of the week the venues will host a series of scientific exhibitions and classes for schoolchildren. She wants the kids to be able to try out the instruments on the iPad and write songs.

Two decades since the Sugarcubes, at 45 she is still creating and continually pushing back the barriers of her music. I hope I will be lucky enough to see her Biophilia tour. Ending this post, enjoy ‘Isobel‘ an old time favorite track taken from her recent live show at Manchester International Festival 2011.

AMMA: A Humanitarian and a Divine Mother

AMMA

I first learned about Sri Mata Amritanandamayi or Amma, as the followers call her, about  four years ago. I remember learning about the “Hugging Mother” on television. I traveled to India a few years ago and learned even more about her. Amma never stops  giving. She gives her divine love for the goodness of all and leaves nobody behind.

AMMA

Amma lives day by day constantly in happiness, embraces people and gives them divine guidance. She is all for love and service for humanity through selfless actions. She is a living proof for a possibility of a luminous, EGO-less being who loves unconditionally and indiscriminately.

Through a divine mother such as Amma one can learn that there is more to life than just physical existence with normal, day-to-day way of living. Everyone has a higher purpose in life. Knowing this purpose gives us bliss and fulfillment in life. Amma has various humanitarian activities all around the world. She heads organizations that provide free homes for the poor and needy, orphanages, schools, hospitals,  nature preservation and many more.

AMMA visiting her "Home for the Children" in Kenya

I had an opportunity to meet Amma for the second time during her last visit in Los Angeles. It was indeed a blessing and grace to be around her divine love and compassion.  I was again moved and inspired by her spirit and selflessness to serve others. She kept up all night to give her love, compassion and service by embracing everyone who came for her. Her hug heals.

I’d like to close with my all time favorite quote from Amma. “In this universe it is love that binds everything together.  Love is the very foundation, beauty, and fulfillment of life.” I am creating an intention that we are always surrounded by love that may assist us to unravel our greater purpose in life.

Embracing Life’s Transitions to Move Forward

Goddess of Dust symbolizing change by Android Jones

Run as you will hide you will not, the inevitable transition surrounds us. We can choose to resist or embrace its presence but transition stops for no one. I have noticed a whirlwind encompassing my circle of friends including myself.  I wonder, is this incredible amount of change surfacing in everyone’s life or is it just a coincidence that it’s a common story? That I cannot explain, but it did bring me to explore the topic and perhaps bring some comfort to the unknown. After all, change symbolizes the unknown, which is one of the greatest fears of us all.

As I delve in deeper to the topic of “change”, I consult my lovely fiancée Justin who studies these topics aggressively as he is in his final year in a Masters of Psychology program at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks.

To learn to accept and work effectively with change, we must first be able to recognize the different stages of change. In doing so, you will reward yourself with incredible amounts of personal insight and growth. Generally speaking, there are 4 stages of change: pre-contemplation, contemplation, action and maintenance.

In the pre-contemplative stage, you will find yourself unsettled with your reality.  Although you don’t understand why. In this stage, you will not be able to recognize that you are in this stage…you’re just uncomfortable. Dissatisfied but you aren’t yet addressing why. We can all think of examples in our life where we felt this discomfort without acknowledging the true reasons why. When we begin to realize the reasons why we’re not happy, we enter the contemplative stage.

In the stage of contemplation, there are a lot of layers. A lot of emotions. This is the place where we plan our course of action. What supports we need in place to get there, in order to make these crucial decisions. A stage of education. A highly insightful stage. What are the effects of breaking up with a lover, or getting a new job? What resources or support do you need in order to make this happen? In this stage find comfort in turbulent emotion. Emotion is the root of motivation. Motivation gets you through the contemplative stage. This is a place of stagnancy in a lot of people so I say Get MAD!!!! GET EMOTIONAL!!!! Let emotions move you into the next level, which is action.

Goddess of Dust symbolizing change by Android Jones

Action speaks louder than words. In the action stage, you take all that you gained in insight, all that you’ve planed and contemplated and implement it into your reality. This isn’t to say that it will work, but you are in motion and the right circumstances will emerge from being true to yourself. Prepare to be uncomfortable in this stage. The uncomforted of this stage can be so intense that people will choose not to evolve into their truth in order to avoid it. What they can’t see is the beautiful butterfly waiting to emerge on the other side. Mystery holds this stage captive. When we learn to give into the mystery and face the unknown we learn the ultimate trust. And action is no longer scary.

The final stage is maintenance. You are now the triumphant butterfly that weathered the storm. Honor yourself and what you’ve been through. Happiness surrounds you. To maintain this is not always simple though, being able to uphold your lifestyle to support your changes takes a conscious effort. Learning how to tailor your reality is an art form.  Ideally, we are never at a final resting place. Life is a continuum of change and growth that can be experienced more efficiently through awareness and personal insight.

Thank you so much for your time in exploring this topic with me, please I would love to hear feedback, personal stories, pearls of wisdom etc…relating to this ever-so-prevalent subject!

In Posso We Trust

possouniverse

In Goddess Vortex, we admire heroines who went above and beyond in going after their dreams. Meet Posso, the ever evolving project by artists and best friends Marylouise Pels and Vanessa Giovacchini. Both are native Californians, who traveled across the globe to rock the crowds with their electro disco music. Aside from being outrageously gorgeous, these two women have successfully collaborated fashion and music into an eccentric art that created a brand name for themselves, Posso Universe that is.

Here are some pictures of the spats they have designed.

Posso is an Italian verb for “I Can”, a simple affirmation that anyone can use as their conduit in pursuing their goals. Having accomplished so much in their twenties, “I Can” is definitely the right attitude and mindset that brought them to where they are today. They are the living proof of what “I Can” do for you.

Go check out their music,  my personal favorite is “Down in Mexico” that is perfect for driving in your convertible with the top down in the summer time. To feel a little more “Posso” click on their website and be prepared to get lost in Posso Universe.

Have a happy summer.

The A to Z in Beating June Gloom

Vacation away from the gloom

Most of you may already be familiar with this if you live in Southern California.  For those of you who don’t, here’s a quick description: gloomy weather in June.  No sun.  Just gloom.  Thus, doom.  So how do you get around it?  Whether you prefer to stay in or get some fresh air, or maybe want a creative writing assignment, here’s my take on it from A-Z.

A. Avoid.  Avoid using the term and people who bring the gloom! I use the same approach when I’m starting to feel the symptoms of a cold, flu, or anything that might keep me indoors.

B. Break…me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar.  I have to keep you entertained, so please keep reading.

C. Caffeine.  When is it not a good idea to have caffeine? Water is always my drink of choice, but my day doesn’t begin until I’ve had a pipin’ hot cup of coffee.  And for days like these in June, a cup at a quiet café helps bring a little sunshine.

D. Deny.  Like “A” (above) I don’t let what I see or hear affect how I feel.  Deny.  Deny.  Deny!  It IS a beautiful day in Southern California.

E. Exercise.  Science has proven it and I live by it.  Nothing cures the blues better than a good workout.  And when the weather is the least inviting is when exercise is most needed.  So throw on your running or walking shoes and hit the road.

Exercise to get rid of the gloom

F. Food.  Why?  ‘cause it makes me happy.

G. Gwenisms.  I create my own language, desserts, likes and dislikes.  So this is just more creative thinking time.

H. Hibernate.  I love the outdoors, but sometimes a day in to just recharge is necessary.  Since there doesn’tseem to be anything new on t.v., I’ve gone through my bookshelves to find unread books and rediscover new appreciation for others.  My dvd collection is once again appreciated and I finally have time to revisit the final cylon revealed! (BSG fans raise your hands!)

I. Invite.  Invite a friend, physically, the human way, not the Facebook way.  Misery may love company, but I prefer laughter; someone who brings the positivity and kicks misery’s arse (after I do).  My choice is usually the goddess vortex founder herself, on our traditional Starbucks pow-wow when she’s in town to bring the fabulosity. (What up, San!)

J. Jello.  Sugarfree Cherry Jell-o is my latest addiction.  It’s easy to make, cheap and more importantly de-(wait for it)-lightful.  In case you missed it that was my Barney Stinson tribute.  Presentation is everything, so I use a tall parfait glass and add fruits (peaches or bananas for me).

K. Krav Maga.  I’ve been wanting to try this for the past 2 years, and finally found a place nearby, but it’s easier watching it in action thanks to the badassery (another Gwenism) of Maggie Q in Nikita.  (The only reason to watch the CW).

L. Learn.  Learn something new or learn more of something you already know.  I recently read a great article about how the Japanese are the masters of perfecting an art.  This is so true.  It’s not enough to know how to make something better, but instead to perfect it.  So I decided to learn how to use a sewing machine.  It’s been over 20 years since my High School clothing class where I ambitiously put together an outfit, and then must’ve suffered a brain injury because I then decided to wear it, so it was a re-learning of sorts.  I’m still trying to figure out the hem.

M. Meditate.  It doesn’t require a yoga mat, candles, sounds of a sitar, or even hot yogi Cameron to do this.  However you define and practice this, do it.  Find a quiet place or create it by allowing yourself to just breathe.

Meditate out the gloom

N. Nectarines.  The anti-peach.  No fuss or fuzz.  They seem to be in season because I’ve seen them everywhere.  I’m sure there are many health benefits, but the most important reason for eating anything is that it tastes good.  And they do.

O. Online shopping.  These days, I think it’s online window shopping.

P. Peruse.  What better place than a bookstore?  Unfortunately, as I experienced earlier this week, this may not be the most relaxing activity since it’s summer break and every child is on the loose.  But normally, it’s a Noble place to hang out.

Q. Quickwrite.  This was one of my favorite activities in my High School Creative Writing class.  Spending 5-10 minutes writing about something in your journal can also be therapeutic if you can’t afford to sit on a $2000 couch and tell someone who is charging you $200 per hour what you just wrote in your moleskin.

R. Run.  More exercise, more eating, more living.  This should be my motto.

S. See.  Check out your local neighborhood to see what you’ve been missing.  I recently discovered a great pita shop that’s been in the area for 3 years!  To think that I would’ve seen this had I taken just ten more steps past the apparel shop.

T. Tunes.  Since I already used “M” for something other than music, this is where it ended up.  I don’t think anything else evokes emotion (for me) more than music.  Music has never been easier to carry, so most of us are rarely without it.  So if you need a quick upper, this is the healthiest ;-)

U. USTA.  The United States Tennis Association.  I need to hit the courts again and redefine my tan lines.  Also, the pros are back in Southern California at two major tournaments: Carlsbad and Los Angeles.  Roger still has the best backhand and wardrobe – on and off the court.

V. Vacation.  Whether it’s local or foreign, weekend or extended, a vacation is always a good idea.  And if you can’t afford it, then travel magazines are the next best thing.  (I’m liking AFAR at the moment)

Vacation away from the gloom

W. Women’s World Cup.  It kicks off this month in Germany.  I’ve always been a fan of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team since the days of Mia Hamm and my favorite Kate Sobrero Markgraff, and I’m hoping this next generation will continue the tradition. C’mon you yanks! (The men’s team is currently in the Gold Cup, fyi).

X. Xuxa, Xylophone, Xanadu,  Xerox.  Think of as many words that begin with the letter “X” and you’ll forget what you were doing before.

Y. Yawn…because it’s the prelude to…

Z. Zzz.   We all could catch up on some.

Sleep off the gloom

Passion for Fashion Series: My Current Obsession for Fringes

hbz-Marant-fw-05-de

I am not one who follows trend alerts when it comes to fashion. However, I must say I follow my passion and express it to the most.  I don’t believe in being “fashionably correct”. Instead I follow my best intuition, emotion, creativity and imagination to create the style. ME style. I go through various phases in life and each phase is fully expressed by the look I project.

In my current phase of life I feel that I have the utmost unconventional freedom, versatility and also am enabled to really tap into my femininity and sensuality. Of course when it comes to dressing myself I love to project that unconventional freedom yet expressive in terms of sensuality.  Oh and of course, I feed my ego by always wanting to be “different”. So here comes one of my current obsessions in clothing items: FRINGES. Versatile, free, unconventional, feminine, sexy, bohemian and different. The images below represent all of the above.

It is my intention that all of us find our true passion or essence and project it beautifully to create our own style.

Much love from the Vortex,

SRW
